| The Alzheimer’s map lines up with the spraying map |
| Start with a map, not a patient. A team at the Medical University of South Carolina laid Alzheimer’s rates over farm chemical use across 3,033 American counties. The dementia figures covered adults over 65. The spraying records covered 462 different chemicals. |
| Let me explain what they did next. Most studies pick one chemical and test it alone. Farms do not work that way. The same ground gets a soil treatment, then a weed killer, then an insect spray. So the team hunted for chemicals that travel together. They found 112 that held up under repeated testing, and sorted those into 25 groups. |
| Twenty of the 25 groups lined up. Higher use, higher Alzheimer’s rates. Three kinds stood out. Soil treatments pumped into the ground before planting, broad weed killers, and insect sprays built to jam nerve signals. Before the chemical data went in, the model explained 44% of the gap between counties. After, it explained 59%. |

This is weather, not a diagnosis. County numbers cannot tell you what any one man breathed. Rates also run higher where people are older, poorer or sicker. The team corrected for that as far as the data allowed. |

| I could be wrong here. The design cannot prove cause, and the authors say so themselves. But the pattern is hard to shrug off. It held across 3,033 counties. And it grew stronger when the chemicals were counted in mixtures, not one at a time. That is how a field is actually treated. |

| Use your own name when you worry |
| Swap one word and the heat drops. Say your own name instead of “I.” Not “why am I so worked up.” Try “John, why are you so worked up.” It sounds odd on the page. It works by putting distance between you and the worry. |
| Ethan Kross tested this two ways. His team at the University of Michigan started with 29 adults. They looked at hard images while their brain activity was recorded. The spike that marks an emotional hit shrank within a second when people used their own name. Then 50 adults called up painful memories inside a scanner. The self-focused region ran quieter. |
| Here is the part that surprised them. Holding feelings down normally costs effort, and the brain’s control areas light up when you do it. Those areas stayed quiet. Think of stepping back from a painting instead of pressing your nose to the canvas. Same picture, less heat, and no strain. |

| Past 90, the risk has not let go |
| The risk does not flatten at 90. A team at the University of California, Davis, has followed more than 800 adults past that birthday. They run it with Kaiser Permanente. The median age is 92. Women ran roughly double the risk of men. One common version of the cholesterol-carrying gene came with about 60% lower risk. And a few carried high blood pressure and high cholesterol through their sixties, then stayed sharp anyway. Nobody yet knows what shielded them. |

| Walking programs did not move the scores |
| Walking is still worth doing. But a new pooled analysis is honest about what it proves. Researchers combined eight randomised trials — 772 older adults, walking programs running six to 24 weeks. Attention did not budge. Memory did not budge. Overall thinking scores sat flat as well. The decades-long population studies still tie a walking habit to lower dementia rates. A few months on a treadmill simply cannot show it on a test. |

| Helping beat visiting |
| Seeing friends helps. Helping them helps more. A University of Texas at Austin team followed 29,777 older Americans across 14 years of surveys. Visits only showed up in the thinking scores when they happened weekly or more often. Unpaid help — errands, repairs, a hand with the grandchildren — tracked better, and the strongest tie sat near 100 to 200 hours a year. Call it two to four hours a week. Past that the gain tailed off. |

| Do the amber evening glasses do anything? |
