| A jammed protein starves brain cells of energy |
| Brain cells are hungry. Your brain is about two percent of your weight and burns roughly a fifth of your fuel. It burns that fuel inside tiny power plants called mitochondria. When the power plants slow, the cell struggles. A team at ETH Zurich in Switzerland has now found one reason they slow. |
| Let me explain what they saw. There is a protein in your cells called GRK2. It exists in a working form and a broken one. In brain tissue from people with dementia, the broken form piles up. It clumps together, drifts onto the mitochondria, and packs over the small pores they use to move material in and out. Picture grit packed over the vents of a furnace. The fire is still lit. It simply cannot breathe. |
| And a cell short of energy gets stressed. A stressed cell makes more amyloid — the sticky protein that builds up into the plaques found in Alzheimer’s brains. More amyloid, more stress. More stress, more clumping. The loop feeds itself, which may be part of why the disease creeps for years before anyone notices. |

Ursula Quitterer’s group built a molecule they call Compound 10 to stop the clumping. In mice, the power plants went back to work. Amyloid dropped, more nerve cells survived, heart function improved, and several markers of aging slowed down with them. |

| Now the honest part. This is mice, plus donated human brain tissue. Compound 10 has never been given to a person. I could be wrong about how far it travels, and most compounds that look this good in a mouse never reach a pharmacy. But I believe the target is the real news. It points at the energy supply, not only at the plaques. |
| You cannot buy a GRK2 blocker. You can look after the power plants you already own. I urge you to guard the three things that feed them — steady blood sugar, real sleep, and movement most days of the week. |

| Drink on a clock, not on thirst |
| Thirst goes quiet with age. The signal that tells you to drink weakens after sixty. Older adults take in less fluid than younger ones. And they never feel short of it. So a lot of men walk around a little dry and never know it. |
| A little dry is enough to cost you. Researchers at Penn State followed adults averaging about sixty. They measured hydration in the blood, not by asking. The ones who came up dehydrated did clearly worse on a fourteen-minute attention task. Memory held steady, and so did reasoning. Attention was what slipped. |
| That is a small fix with a real payoff. And the answer is not a gallon jug. It is a schedule. |

| The road outside may be part of the risk |
| Denmark followed nearly two million adults over sixty. The tracking ran about eight years. Homes with road noise above 55 decibels — roughly a busy street heard through a closed window — carried up to 27% higher odds of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Railway noise ran close behind. It is a link, not proof, and loud streets differ from quiet ones in other ways too. Still, the bedroom is the cheap place to act. Put the bed on the quiet side. Shut the window at night. Let a fan cover the rest. |

| Moving slower can be an early signal |
| Sweden looked at very old age. Researchers at Lund University followed 398 adults aged 80 to 101. Those with mild parkinson-like signs — slower movement, stiffness, a shorter stride — scored lower on thinking speed, planning and language. And their scores kept sliding. Eighteen percent went on to develop dementia. The point is not to fret over one slow morning. It is that a real change in how you move belongs in a conversation with your doctor, not in a drawer marked getting older. |

| Screens did not dull these children |
| Finland tracked 260 children for eight years. They started at about age eight and finished at sixteen. The ones with more screen time did not test worse at the end. They tested a shade better on processing speed — how fast the brain takes in and sorts what it sees. The teams at the universities of Jyväskylä and Eastern Finland call it a link, not a cause. They suspect what is on the screen matters far more than the hours. Handy to know before the next argument about a grandchild’s tablet. |

| You can walk back into an old memory and change it |
| Some memories never lose their edge. A teacher’s remark. A father’s verdict on a school report. Fifty years go by and the scene still plays at full voltage. Psychologists in Poland gathered 180 adults with a deep fear of failing. The teams came from SWPS University and the Nencki Institute. Then they asked each one to go back into exactly that kind of memory. |
| One group relived the scene and sat with the feeling. Another group rewrote it. They pictured a protector walking in — stopping the criticism, standing beside the child, saying the thing nobody said at the time. The scene was invented. The relief was not. Stress measured in the skin and the saliva dropped, and so did the sadness, guilt and anger. Six months later, it was still down. |
| What surprised the researchers most was surprise itself. The rewrite worked best when the new ending caught the person off guard. The brain braced for the old outcome and got a different one. A memory seems to soften for a while after you pull it up. Not the facts of it. The charge on it. This was young adults in a lab, and it is no substitute for a therapist. But it does suggest an old scene you have carried since childhood may not be set in stone. |
