| Filtered air made older minds work faster |
| The test ran in ordinary homes. Somerville, Massachusetts sits beside a busy highway. Nicholas Pellegrino and Doug Brugge ran it. They work across Tufts University and the University of Connecticut. Their team put a pair of air filters into 119 households. Each home ran real filters for a month. Each also ran a dummy unit for a month. A quiet month sat in between. Nobody was told which was which. |
| Let me explain what the filters did. Fine soot indoors fell by 52 percent. The very smallest particles fell by 32 percent. Then everyone sat a timed pencil task called Trail Making Part B. You connect numbers and letters in order — one to A, A to two, and on you go. It is a rough measure of mental flexibility. |
| Everyone over 40 finished faster on filtered air. Their time fell from 61.4 seconds to 54.0. That is about 12 percent. Under 40, nothing moved. Age is the tell here. The smallest particles slip out of the lungs into the blood. Some ride the smell nerve straight up. Think of smoke drifting through a screen door. Older vessels have less slack, so the same dirty air costs more. |

The change came from a box on the floor. Nothing else moved. One month of filtered air bought back seven seconds. Nobody changed their food, their sleep or their walking. |

| I could be wrong about how far this carries. One timed task is a narrow slice of thinking. And 119 people is a small group. But the direction fits what we know about soot. I believe the air where you sleep is the most overlooked piece of all this. It costs you nothing to look. |

| Get a baseline number while you feel fine |
| Most men wait for a scare. Then a doctor asks how the memory has been, and the honest answer is a shrug. A score taken that day tells almost nobody anything. One reading is a dot on a page. What a doctor needs is a line. |
| Building that line is the whole point. Medicare’s yearly wellness visit has carried a cognitive check since 2011. Most men never ask for it. The Alzheimer’s Association points doctors to short tests like the Mini-Cog. That one runs about three minutes. Take it at 58, at 59, at 60. A real drop then stands out early. Take it first at 72 and you are guessing. |

| Brief night-time stirrings may carry a signal |
| You surface many times a night without knowing. Sleep scientists call these micro-awakenings. They are short bursts of brain activity that break sleep without waking you. Puneet Talwar and Gilles Vandewalle counted them at the University of Liège. More than 500 healthy adults took part. In the 50 to 69 group, more stirrings meant a higher inherited risk score for Alzheimer’s. Among the young, nothing. The scores were low across the board. This predicts nothing for one man. It points at sleep as an early window. |

| Low mood may stall the brain’s neuron line |
| Your brain keeps building new nerve cells. Most of that work happens in the hippocampus. That is the seahorse-shaped patch that files memories. Maura Dupont and colleagues at Columbia read almost half a million cells from donated brain tissue. In people who had lived with major depression, the line had stalled. Similar memories may then blur together. They drag the same dark feeling along. Restarting the line is now a drug target. |

| A speck that lights up brain cancer |
| A surgeon cannot see every cancer cell. Bingyang Shi at the University of Technology Sydney built a particle that does two jobs. Harvard and Henan University worked on it too. It glows during surgery. That marks clumps 44 micrometers across, about half the width of a hair. Then the same particles switch back on and burn off what was left. Every treated mouse was alive at 60 days. Surgery alone gave 42. Mice only, and a human brain is a far bigger room. |

| Half the wiring vanished and the memory held |
| A memory lives in the connections. That has been the rule for a century. The connections are synapses — the tiny junctions where one brain cell hands a signal to the next. Lose them and you lose the memory. It is the reason plaques and shrinking scare us so much. |
| Then Kazumasa Tanaka’s team put mice into artificial hibernation. Body cold, brain idling, firing down about 70 percent. More than half the synapses in the hippocampus simply went away. The mice warmed up and sat the memory tests again. Recall was the same. In some of them it was better. |
| Certain clusters had been spared. Size did not decide which ones. So a memory may not sit in the count. It may sit in the pattern. Think of a constellation that keeps its shape after stars go dark. If that holds in people, losing connections and losing a life story are not the same event. That is a direction worth watching. |
