| Let me explain what researchers at the University of California, San Francisco and Beth Israel Deaconess found. They recorded people’s brain waves during sleep. Then a computer read tiny features in those waves — the slow rollers of deep sleep, the quick bursts tied to memory. From those alone, it guessed each person’s brain age. |
| Think of it as an odometer for the mind, read off a single night. They ran it on about 7,000 adults, ages 40 to 94, and followed them for years. The result was hard to miss. For every 10 years a brain looked older than its owner, the risk of dementia rose by nearly 40%. |
