62% faster decline
Diet soda feels like the safe choice. A big new study says look again. Researchers tracked nearly 13,000 adults for eight years. People who used the most no-calorie sweeteners lost memory and thinking faster — about 62% faster than those who used the least. That’s close to 1.6 extra years of brain aging. The link was strongest in people with diabetes, and in adults under 60. Over 60, the study didn’t find it. So this is a link, not proof, and I could be wrong about what it means for you. But the swap is easy. Reach for water, plain coffee, or tea — and save the sweet stuff for real food.

The irony is hard to miss. Many people reach for sweeteners to protect their blood sugar. Yet the faster decline showed up most in people who already have diabetes. We keep landing on the same idea — that Alzheimer’s may act like a kind of diabetes in the brain, where brain cells can’t use fuel well. A spinal-injury drug just showed a new way to fight Alzheimer’s
Most Alzheimer’s drugs chase one thing. This one goes after several. Researchers at King’s College London tested a drug called KCL-286. It was first built for spinal cord injury, not the brain.
In mice with an Alzheimer’s-like disease, it did two useful things at once. It helped repair broken DNA inside brain cells. And it cooled the low, slow inflammation that shows up early in the disease.
Let me explain the DNA part. Each brain cell holds a long strand of DNA, like a rope. Sometimes that rope snaps clean in two — not just frayed, but fully broken. Those breaks pile up early in Alzheimer’s. The drug helped the cells mend them.
  KCL-286 flips a switch tied to how the body uses vitamin A. That switch tells cells to repair themselves and settle down. It aims at several early problems at once — not just the famous plaques.
There’s another reason to watch this one. It has already cleared an early human safety test — for the spinal injury it was first meant to treat. That head start could carry it into Alzheimer’s trials faster than a brand-new drug.
Now the caution. This was mice, not people with Alzheimer’s. Wins in mice often shrink in humans, and I could be wrong about how this plays out. We’re talking about research in progress.
Still, I believe the direction matters. A drug that fixes several problems could beat one that fixes just one. I urge you to keep an eye on it — and to keep doing the basics while the science catches up.

Try tai chi — gentle to do, strong for the brain
One practice looks easy but isn’t. It’s tai chi. Slow, flowing movement you can do at any age.
It works the brain on three fronts. You balance. You shift your weight. And you learn a sequence of moves and hold it in mind. That mix of movement and memory is what an aging brain craves. People call it moving meditation — calm on the outside, busy on the inside.
The body wins too. In older adults, regular tai chi lowers blood pressure — often by around 10 points on the top number. Lower pressure protects the small blood vessels that supply your brain. It also sharpens balance, which cuts the odds of a fall and a knock to the head.
You don’t need a class or special gear to begin. Here is a simple way to start.

A constipation drug eased the brain fog of depression
This one is a surprise. Scientists at the University of Birmingham gave a common constipation drug, prucalopride, to adults who had recovered from depression. After a week to ten days, those on the drug were faster and sharper on memory and attention tests than those on a dummy pill. The drug switches on a gut-and-brain messenger tied to learning. The group was small and young, and it’s not a treatment yet. But it hints that clearing mental fog may be within reach.

Feeling sleepy all day may be an early warning sign
Daytime drowsiness isn’t just about last night. In a study that followed 617 older adults for up to ten years, those who felt very sleepy during the day were more likely to develop dementia. The link ran through two things quietly brewing in the brain — the sticky proteins tied to Alzheimer’s, and damage to the brain’s small blood vessels. Think of the sleepiness as smoke, and those two as the fire. It doesn’t prove one causes the other. But if you’re nodding off most days, it’s worth a word with your doctor.

The Mediterranean diet may switch on tiny protective proteins
Food cuts both ways. Adults who ate closest to a Mediterranean pattern — olive oil, fish, beans, vegetables — carried more of two tiny proteins made inside their cells’ energy factories. The pair, humanin and SHMOOSE, are tied to a healthier heart and brain and to steadier blood sugar. Olive oil, fish, and legumes drove the effect. It’s a link, not proof the food raised them. Still, it’s one more reason real food beats a can of diet soda.

London just wrapped the year’s biggest dementia meeting. The field is busy. More than 150 treatments now sit in human trials. They aim at a wider range of targets than ever — not only the sticky plaques and tangled fibers of Alzheimer’s, but inflammation, the immune system, and the links between brain cells. Some will fall short. Here are three worth watching.
A pill built to shield tau just failed its big test
Tau is the protein that tangles inside brain cells in Alzheimer’s. Eli Lilly built a pill, ceperognastat, meant to keep tau from clumping. In a trial of 327 people with early Alzheimer’s, it didn’t slow decline at all. At the higher dose, people did a bit worse. Lilly has shelved it. A clear ‘no’ still helps — it steers the field away from a dead end.

A treatment that retrains the immune system to calm the brain
Your body has peacekeeper cells called regulatory T-cells. Their job is to cool inflammation. In Alzheimer’s they seem to fall down on the job. Coya Therapeutics is testing a two-part treatment, COYA-302, that strengthens these peacekeepers so they quiet the inflammation around struggling brain cells. It’s early — small, first-stage trials — and firm results aren’t in yet. But calming the brain’s fire from the inside is a fresh angle.

A pill that guards the connection points between brain cells
Brain cells talk across tiny junctions called synapses. Toxic clumps of amyloid can jam those junctions and shut down the signal. Zervimesine, an oral drug from Cognition Therapeutics, blocks the docking spot those clumps use — so the junctions keep working. Mid-stage trials in early Alzheimer’s and in Lewy body dementia have shown early promise, clearest in people whose disease hadn’t advanced as far. Larger trials are running now.
