| The plan to clear out the brain’s ‘zombie’ cells |
| Some of your cells refuse to die. As you age, cells get damaged and stop working. Most should quietly clear out. A few don’t. They just linger. Scientists call them senescent cells — too broken to do their job, too stubborn to leave. |
| Let me explain why they matter. A senescent cell is like a dead tree that won’t fall. It stands there and rots. And it gives off smoke — a slow drip of inflammation that irritates the healthy cells around it. In the brain, that smoke may speed up aging and memory loss. |
| So researchers asked a plain question. What if you cleared the dead trees out? Two cheap drugs can do it, taken together. One is dasatinib, an old cancer pill. The other is quercetin, found in onions and apples. They’re called senolytics, because they hunt down senescent cells. A team at UT Health San Antonio and Wake Forest ran the first human tests. The subjects had early Alzheimer’s. |

| I’ll be straight with you. These were small safety trials — a handful of people, a few months each. They were never built to prove the memory part. So we don’t know yet if this works. I could be wrong about how far it goes. This is research in progress. |
| Still, I believe the idea is worth watching. Clearing worn-out cells is a fresh angle on a stubborn disease. Bigger trials are running now. I urge you to keep this one on your radar — and to skip anyone selling ‘senolytic’ supplements today. The science isn’t there. |

| Give your brain a bright morning |
| Your brain keeps a clock. It runs on light. Bright light by day sets it. Dim light at night lets it rest. Get that rhythm right and your sleep, mood and memory all steady. |
| One study makes the case. Researchers put wrist sensors on nearly 88,000 adults and tracked their light for a week. Then they followed them for eight years. The people who got the most bright daytime light had about a 16% lower risk of dementia. Brighter days, darker nights — that was the pattern. |
| Think of light as the wind-up key for your body clock. Wind it early and the whole day runs on time — steady focus by day, deep sleep at night. Miss the light and the clock drifts. And you don’t need a fancy lamp. You need to get outside. |

| The lead you grew up with left a mark |
| This one’s for a whole generation. Researchers looked at more than 600,000 adults over 65. Those who grew up in high-lead areas were about 20% more likely to report memory trouble. That was 50 years later. Lead is a metal that harms brain cells and never fully leaves the body. You can’t undo old exposure. But you can guard against new lead, in old paint and old pipes. And hold the line on everything else. |

| Your habits still beat most of your genes |
| This one’s hopeful. Japanese researchers tracked 9,600 adults past 65. They sorted them by a risk gene called APOE4. It’s the most common gene tied to Alzheimer’s. For people with no copy or one, a healthy life paid off. That means moving often, eating well, not smoking. It meant less dementia, and less brain shrinkage. The one exception: the rare few with two copies didn’t get the same shield. For most of us, that’s a good deal. Your daily choices carry real weight. |

| A gentle current nudged old memory back |
| Scientists ran a soft current across the scalp. Twenty minutes a day, four days running, in adults aged 65 to 88. It’s called transcranial stimulation — a mild, painless current, not the jolt from old movies. One rhythm hit the front of the head. It lifted working memory. That’s the scratchpad you use to hold a phone number. Another aimed farther back lifted longer-term recall. The gains held for about a month. It’s a lab tool for now, not a home gadget. But it shows the older brain still bends. |

| It’s everywhere right now — capsules, coffees, gummies. The pitch is that it helps your brain grow fresh connections. And there’s a real thread here. In lab dishes and animals, lion’s mane spurs a nerve-growth signal. A few small human trials look promising, too. In one, older adults with mild memory trouble improved over 16 weeks — then slipped back after they stopped. A newer 2026 trial of 109 adults found a small gain in attention and memory over eight weeks. |
| But the human evidence is thin. The trials are small and short. Some tested young, healthy people. No long study has shown it holds off decline or dementia. And the dose and form swing wildly from one brand to the next. |
| Verdict: Fine to try — cheap and low-risk — but keep your hopes small. A maybe, not a must. |
