Is Alzheimer’s partly a blood-sugar problem?
A puzzle to sit with this weekend. A huge new study tracked 258,000 adults over 55 — none of them diabetic. People whose bodies handled sugar best had 27% lower dementia risk. Their brains even looked about two years younger on scans. Some scientists see a deep link. They call Alzheimer’s “type 3 diabetes.” But a link is not a cause. When a drug that lowers blood sugar, semaglutide, was tested against Alzheimer’s this year, it missed. So which way does the arrow run? Does insulin trouble help drive the disease, or just ride along with it? We don’t know yet. I lean toward the link being real. I could be wrong, of course. Sit with it.
 
Why This Matters Even More
Whichever way the arrow points, your blood sugar is worth minding. When cells stop answering insulin, brain cells can’t pull in the fuel they burn. And these adults were not diabetic — the drift showed up while their sugar still looked fine on paper. The steadying habits are simple and safe either way: a short walk after meals, steady sleep, a little strength work, fewer quick carbs. No downside, whatever the science lands on.

The most common Alzheimer’s gene may harm the brain long before memory fades
One gene raises Alzheimer’s risk most. It’s called APOE4. About one in four people carry a single copy. A smaller group carries two. If that’s you, this next part matters.
Scientists at the Gladstone Institutes traced what APOE4 does early. They worked in mice built to carry the human gene. The gene pushed brain cells to make more of a protein called Nell2. And that extra Nell2 changed how memory neurons behaved.
Let me explain. In the hippocampus — your brain’s memory hub — the neurons started to shrink. At the same time they grew jumpy and fired too much. Picture a thermostat stuck too high: the furnace runs when it shouldn’t and wears itself out. All of this began before any memory loss showed up.
  The hopeful part came next. When the team lowered Nell2, the neurons went back to normal. A problem you can undo in the lab is a problem worth chasing in people.
This is mouse work, and I could be wrong about how well it carries to us. Carrying APOE4 is not a sentence, either — plenty of carriers never get the disease. But it points at a target we didn’t have before.
If Alzheimer’s runs in your family, I urge you to take a hard look at this one. A simple blood or cheek test can tell you your APOE type. Knowing it changes what you watch for.

Care for your gums to help protect your brain
Your mouth and your brain are linked. One gum germ keeps showing up in this story. Its name is Porphyromonas gingivalis — the bug behind serious gum disease.
When gums get infected and bleed, that germ can slip into the blood. From there it can travel to the brain. It carries enzymes called gingipains — tiny scissors that damage nerve cells. Scientists have found them in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients, right next to more plaque and more swelling.
A large government-backed study also tied gum disease to higher dementia risk. That doesn’t prove one causes the other. But keeping the germ down is cheap, and good for you anyway. So build a simple routine around the gumline.

Every day, for good. Add a dental cleaning every 6 months.
Rules
Floss first, then brush a full 2 minutes. Angle the bristles into the gumline. Treat bleeding gums — they’re a warning, not a normal thing.
 
Watch for gums that bleed or pull back from the teeth. Both are signs of gum disease you can treat. I urge you to give your gums the same care you’d give your heart.

Loneliness may weigh on the aging brain — more so in women
Feeling alone isn’t only hard on the heart. In a 2026 review, lonely older adults tended to have smaller brain regions and weaker skills for planning and focus. The tie looked stronger in women, who face more of it later in life. Loneliness sits on the short list of dementia risks you can actually change.

Treating sleep apnea early may guard your memory
Sleep apnea means your breathing stops and starts many times a night. Each pause robs the brain of oxygen. University of Miami researchers report that catching it early and treating it — often with a mask that keeps the airway open — may protect memory and lower dementia risk. Loud snoring and daytime fog are common clues worth checking.

Using your phone and computer may not rot the brain after all
The fear of “digital dementia” may have it backwards. Researchers pooled 136 studies covering more than 400,000 older adults. Those who regularly used computers, phones, and the internet had lower rates of memory decline, not higher. The catch is how you use it — learning, connecting, and problem-solving help; endless scrolling doesn’t count.

The Debate
Should older adults take a daily multivitamin for memory?
Side A
A large trial called COSMOS-Mind gave thousands of older adults a cheap daily multivitamin or a dummy pill for about three years. The vitamin group held onto memory and thinking a little better. The edge was small, but real, and the pill costs pennies. Backers say it’s an easy, low-risk hedge — useful if your diet has gaps.
Side B
Others aren’t sold. Earlier multivitamin trials in older adults found no memory benefit at all. The COSMOS gain was modest, and may not hold for everyone. Most doctors still say whole foods beat a pill — leafy greens, fish, nuts — because a tablet can’t copy everything in real food. No pill fixes a poor diet.
