A shingles shot may lower dementia risk. The puzzle is why.
Start with an accident of timing. In Wales, a shingles vaccine rolled out with a strict birthday cutoff. People born a week apart — alike in every other way — either qualified or just missed out. That quirk handed researchers a rare, almost coin-flip comparison. Years later, the vaccinated group had about 20% less dementia. Stanford’s Pascal Geldsetzer led the work, published in Nature. Newer studies point the same way.

So the shot seems to help. The open part is why. Shingles comes from a virus that hides in the body for decades. Maybe the vaccine keeps that virus quiet, sparing the brain a slow, low burn of damage. Or maybe it nudges the whole immune system in a way that guards the brain — no single virus required.

We’re talking about research in progress. This isn’t proof, and the shot is not a treatment for dementia. But it points somewhere hopeful: a piece of this disease may begin with an infection we can already prevent. Worth thinking about before your next doctor’s visit.

Washington Is Betting More Than the Company Is Worth

Here's a number that shouldn't be possible.

On May 21, 2026, a federal board voted unanimously to lend roughly $3 billion to one American mining company. That loan is bigger than the company's entire market cap.

Think about what that says. The people who spent months inside this deal, with access to every drill report and every projection, decided this company deserves more capital than the market thinks the whole business is worth.

One of those valuations is wrong. The papers get signed in the second half of this year. After that, the market does the correcting.

Your brain may have a sleep sweet spot
Sleep is not a case of more-is-better. For years the worry was too little sleep. That worry is fair — short nights wear on the brain. But a big new study says the other end matters too.
Let me explain. Researchers looked at nearly 39,000 adults in the UK Biobank, a huge British health project. They matched how long people slept against brain scans and memory tests. The scans were read by a computer trained to spot an Alzheimer’s-type shrinkage pattern. The work appears in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia, led by Georgios Anagnostakis and colleagues.
Both ends of the range looked worse. People who slept too little — and people who slept too much — showed more of that shrinkage pattern and scored lower on memory and thinking. The middle, around seven hours, looked best. Picture sleep as your brain’s nightly cleanup crew, clearing waste while you rest. Too few hours and the crew never finishes.
  The surprise sits at the long end. More sleep isn’t automatically better — and suddenly needing nine or ten hours may be a sign the brain is already struggling, not a fix.
I could be wrong on the exact number. This is one snapshot, and it can’t prove that sleep length causes the change — long sleep may be a warning light, not the cause. But the sweet-spot pattern keeps showing up across studies. I believe the hours you spend asleep are worth guarding.
I urge you to aim for a steady seven. And treat sudden, heavy oversleeping as a reason to see your doctor, not to brush off.

Take your walk among trees
Where you walk changes what you get. A walk helps the brain anywhere. But green space seems to give a little extra. Trees, a park, a bit of water — they calm the body and rest a tired mind.
Nature eases the stress hormone cortisol. It also lets your focus recharge, the way a phone charges when you set it down. Researchers at the University of Michigan showed this well. People who walked in a park did about 20% better on a memory-and-attention task than people who walked the same distance downtown. Same effort, greener setting, sharper mind. A later British study found that two hours a week in nature tracked with better health and mood.
You don’t need a forest. A quiet, leafy street counts. Here is a simple way to fold it in.

Check your vitamin D — and your B12
Low vitamin D keeps turning up alongside Alzheimer’s-type brain changes and faster memory loss in older adults. One large study even tied taking vitamin D to a lower rate of dementia over time. Low vitamin B12 or folate can copy the look of early decline too, and it’s often missed. A simple blood test tells you where you stand. Fix a real gap with food, sun, or a modest supplement — no need to mega-dose.

A second language may buy you years
People who speak two languages tend to develop Alzheimer’s later than people who speak one. Researchers at Concordia University and others link a lifetime of two languages to “younger,” better-connected brains. The idea is cognitive reserve — think of it as a savings account your brain draws on when age starts making withdrawals. And it is not too late. Picking up a new language now still gives the brain a real workout.

Bleeding gums may be a brain matter
The mouth and the brain are more connected than they look. A germ behind gum disease — Porphyromonas gingivalis — and the tissue-damaging enzymes it makes have been found in the brains of people who had Alzheimer’s. Large studies tie gum disease to higher dementia risk, likely through slow, body-wide inflammation. None of this proves cause. Still, treating sore or bleeding gums is a cheap, easy win. Keep up the cleanings.

Do statins hurt the brain — or protect it?

Some people swear a statin fogged their thinking. They describe word-finding trouble or slippery memory that lifts once they stop the drug. It is not far-fetched on paper. The brain is rich in cholesterol, and the statins that slip into brain tissue could, in theory, touch that supply. Regulators once added a note about rare, reversible memory complaints. For a man who felt sharp before the pill and cloudy after, that story is hard to wave away.

The big trials tell a calmer story. When researchers pool tens of thousands of people in randomized studies, statins show no real dent in memory or thinking. And because statins protect blood vessels, several large studies link long-term use to lower dementia risk, not higher. Vessel health is brain health. Stopping a statin your heart needs carries its own proven danger — heart attack and stroke, which batter the brain in turn. So the caution cuts both ways.
