Only one ran low in the earliest memory loss — lithium. In mice, cutting lithium brought on more plaques and tangles. Those are the sticky clumps and twisted fibers tied to Alzheimer’s. Adding a trace form back restored their memory. That’s mice, though, not people. No one knows a safe human dose yet, and too much lithium can harm the kidneys. So please don’t go buy a bottle. A mild current helped memory — in the right brains
Picture a metronome for your neurons. That’s the idea behind a gentle brain treatment. Doctors call it transcranial alternating current stimulation — a mild current sent through soft pads on the scalp. The current is tuned to the brain’s gamma rhythm. That’s the fast beat, near 40 pulses a second, that your neurons use to fire in time.
In Alzheimer’s, that beat falls apart. So researchers pooled 14 solid trials to see if nudging it back helps. Let me explain what they found.
The current improved short-term recall and delayed recall — the memory you reach for minutes later. But the gain showed up in one group only. It helped people who already had Alzheimer’s. In healthy older adults, it did nothing at all.
  The signal was real, but small. These were short trials, and the current only moved brains that were already slipping.
I could be wrong about where this heads. No one has run a big trial yet. Still, I expect brain-rhythm treatments to grow, because they aim at the wiring, not just the plaques.
Take a hard look at this one before you spend on any home stimulation gadget. For now the proof sits in the clinic, not on your own sharp head.

Have one real conversation a day

You don’t need a big social life. You need a little of it, on purpose. So try a small plan that keeps those circuits busy.

Good sleep may soften genetic risk
Your genes load the dice for Alzheimer’s. Sleep may change how they land. Scientists tracked 351 healthy adults in their mid-70s who already carried amyloid, the sticky protein tied to the disease. Certain risk genes lined up with brain shrinkage and weaker scores — but that link shifted with how long and how well people slept. Better sleep seemed to blunt the genetic hit.

Dirty air tracks with higher Alzheimer’s risk
Dirty air reaches the brain. Fine-particle pollution — the haze off traffic and smoke — was tied to more Alzheimer’s in a study of nearly 28 million older Americans. The link held even after blood pressure, stroke, and depression were counted. A home air filter and fewer high-traffic walks are cheap hedges.

Does red meat hurt your memory?

Start with the numbers. A Harvard team followed more than 133,000 people for close to 40 years. Those who ate the most processed red meat — bacon, hot dogs, deli slices — had a 13% higher dementia risk. Each daily serving looked like about 1.6 extra years of brain aging. Swap in nuts or beans, and the risk dropped.

Now the pushback. The signal is mostly about processed meat, not a fresh steak. Plain unprocessed cuts showed no clear link overall. And this kind of study can’t prove cause — heavy meat eaters differ in many ways. A 2026 analysis even found people with a high-risk gene didn’t follow the same pattern.
