Your brain keeps no fuel in the tank
Your brain is a fuel hog. It weighs about three pounds. That is near 2% of you. Yet it burns close to a fifth of your energy and oxygen. And it stores almost none of it. So it cannot coast for a second. Every time one patch of brain gets busy, that patch must call for fresh blood right then. Tiny support cells wrapped around your neurons send the order. The vessels nearby widen. Blood rushes in, carrying sugar and oxygen to the exact spot doing the work. Picture a kitchen with no pantry. Nothing waits on the shelf. Every plate gets cooked the moment you order it. That is your head, all day long.

This is also what a brain scanner reads — the blood arriving where the work is, not the thought itself. Now picture that delivery route stiffening. Age and high blood pressure harden and narrow those small vessels. The blood still comes… only slower, and less of it. A brain kept a beat behind on fuel thinks a beat slower. So the pipes are the whole point. Keep them soft and open. Move your body. Mind your blood pressure. Then the supply line answers when you call. I believe this is why what guards your heart guards your head. I could be wrong on the fine print. The plumbing is not in doubt.

Four languages, and a brain 13 years younger
Your brain has a spare gear. Scientists just took its measure. Researchers in Spain looked at the brains of hundreds of adults. Some spoke one language. Some spoke two, three, or four. Then they built a kind of clock — a brain age, read from how the cells talk to one another.
Let me explain what turned up. One language set the baseline. Two languages, and the brain looked about six years younger than its birthday. Three languages, seven years younger. Four languages, a full thirteen years younger. More tongues, a younger brain, step by step.
Why would talking do that? Each time you switch languages, your brain picks one and holds the other back. That is fast, quiet work. Do it for years and you lay down a spare set of roads. When age closes one road, the traffic reroutes. The trip still gets made.
  You do not have to be fluent. The brain seems to reward the effort, not the grade.
A fair word of caution now. This came from a conference talk, not a finished paper. It is a link, not proof. People who learn languages often live differently in other ways. I could be wrong about how much is the languages themselves.
But the direction is clear. And it is never too late to begin. I believe the reserve is real, and I urge you to feed it. Learn ten words of a new tongue this week. Label a few things around the house. Every small bit of practice widens the reserve.

Eat a handful of berries most days
This one is a treat. Berries carry a pigment called anthocyanin — the stuff that turns them deep blue and red. That pigment does quiet work inside you. It helps small blood vessels relax and open wider. And you just read what open vessels mean for a hungry brain.
The evidence is real, not folklore. In one trial, older adults with early memory slips ate a daily dose of wild blueberries for six months. Their thinking sped up against a dummy powder. Another study found the berry compounds lifted both blood flow and test scores in healthy older folks. Berries also sit near the top of the MIND diet, the eating pattern tied to slower decline. You do not need a special brand or a pill. Just the fruit, most days.

Your eyes may hint at your memory
The eye is brain you can photograph. The retina at the back of it is a scrap of brain pushed to the surface. Researchers in Singapore taught a computer to read the “biological age” of a retina from a plain eye photo. They checked it in 500 patients, then in 33,000 more in a British databank. An older-looking retina went with a 25 to 40% higher risk of memory trouble later. It cannot diagnose a thing. And it is not in clinics yet. But your yearly eye exam may one day double as a brain check.

Write it down by hand
Reach for a pen, not the keyboard. Researchers in Norway wired up people’s heads while they wrote. Writing by hand lit up far more connection across the brain than typing the same words. It stirred the slow rhythms tied to laying down a memory. Typing left those quiet. The hand seems to teach the brain in a way the keys do not. So jot the grocery list, the birthday card, the note by the phone.

Keep one good listener close
One kind of friend guards the mind. Researchers tracked more than 2,000 adults in the long-running Framingham study. They asked about every sort of support. One rose above the rest — having someone there who truly listens when you need to talk. People who had that kept sharper thinking than their brain size alone would predict. Plain company helps. A real listener seems to help most. Be one for someone, and make sure you have one too.

The Weird One
The mind that comes back at the very end
This one is hard to explain. A man has advanced dementia. For years he has not known his own children. He barely speaks. Then, in his final days, something lifts. He talks. He knows their names. He is himself again — clear and warm and present. Within hours or a day, he is gone.
Doctors have a name for it: terminal lucidity. Nurses and hospice workers have seen it quietly for centuries. Only lately have scientists begun to study it — teams at the University of Virginia, and others gathering families’ accounts. A few have caught a last surge of fast brain waves near the end. No one fully understands it. It is rare. Most who sit with the dying witness it only a handful of times.
But look at what it hints. The memories were not wiped away. The man was still in there. The disease had jammed the door, not emptied the room. It is a hard and strange comfort. And it shows how much we still do not know about a brain — even one that seems to have left.
