| Your habits are reshaping your brain, and it shows on a scan |
| Your daily choices leave a mark. A new brain-imaging study says that mark now shows up on a scan. |
| Scientists at the Center for BrainHealth at the University of Texas at Dallas, working with the University of California, Berkeley, followed 190 healthy adults for four years. Each person had up to five brain scans. The team looked past plain size. They measured the folds and grooves on the brain’s surface — the ridges that pack more thinking tissue into your skull. |
| Let me explain why that matters. For years, a brain scan mostly counted loss — how much tissue had shrunk away. This study read a finer signal: the shape and fold of the surface, changing over time as people’s daily lives changed. Sleep, exercise, stress, learning — the ordinary stuff — left a trace in the folds. |

| Cool the bedroom, deepen the sleep |

| Block one enzyme, protect the movement cells |
| Parkinson’s kills dopamine cells. Dopamine is the chemical that keeps your movements smooth and steady. Cleveland researchers found those dying cells were drowning in a kind of cellular rust — damaging molecules that pile up and wear a neuron down. One enzyme, called 15-PGDH, was running high and feeding the fire. Block it, and the damage eased — in mice and in human brain tissue both. A drug that blocks it has already passed an early safety test in people. Still animal-stage for Parkinson’s, but it points somewhere useful. |

| The good-news cousin of a famous risk gene |
| You’ve likely heard of a gene that raises Alzheimer’s risk. Its quieter cousin does the reverse. This variant, called APOE2, tracks with a longer life and lower Alzheimer’s risk — and scientists now see a reason why. In lab-grown human neurons, cells carrying it repaired their own DNA better and took on less damage. They also resisted turning into ‘zombie’ cells — worn-out neurons that quit working but won’t clear out. You can’t pick your genes. | For women, the timing of hormone therapy may matter |
| Estrogen does a lot for the brain. When it falls at menopause, some protection may fall with it. Researchers at the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s center weighed women’s lifelong estrogen against their brain scans. Estrogen-based hormone therapy lined up with healthier brain structure — with hints that starting near menopause, not years later, fits best. | Paper wasps live in tight colonies. To keep the peace, they have to tell each other apart. And they do it by face — the same trick you use across a crowded room. |
| A wasp’s brain is smaller than a grain of rice. Yet University of Arizona scientists found the face-reading species are wired for it. They hand more of the brain to sight — and less to smell, shrinking the smell center to make room. Wasp species that don’t read faces never made that trade. |
| So face recognition isn’t about brain size. It’s about how the brain is arranged. Wasps evolved their version on a branch far from ours, millions of years apart, and landed on the same answer.
